Dress for windy weather

Your choice of workwear in windy weather
As for all types of weather there are different factors to count in when you are getting dressed for a windy workday. Depending on the season you might want to put on a base layer to build warmth from within or one that transport moisture. Or maybe it’s more convenient to add a shell jacket that can easily be removed if it calms down. Of course time is also of essence, the longer shifts the tougher the demands on the windproof technology used in the garment. As always your body heat plays an important role for your comfort as well. What to wear is dependent of your tasks for the day – will it be low-intense or active work?
Actual temperature vs experienced temperature
To dress right for working in windy weather can be tricky as wind is affecting the experienced temperature, making it feel like it’s colder outside than the thermometer shows. When working during windy conditions it’s therefore important to be aware of actual temperature versus experienced temperature. For example, if it’s 0°C outside and the wind blow 10 m/s the experienced temperature is -7°C. If its +10°C and the wind blow 18 m/s the experienced temperature is +5°C. In other words, quite a difference when it comes to choice of workwear.
Windproof is not the same as non-ventilated
Just as rainwear, your workwear's ability to breathe is crucial for your comfort, even in windy weather. It might sound contradictory that you don’t want to let the wind in, but still want the garment to breathe – but it’s exactly like that. When working hard your workwear need to transport the moisture you produce for you to feel comfortable. Make it a routine to always look for breathability features of your workwear to secure it can ventilate your body heat.
Windproof - How it works
There are several ways to windproof a garment, stopping the wind from cooling you down. To secure maximum protection against wind the fabrics can be coated, laminated or a separate membrane (for example Windstopper®) can be used.
Windproof garments can offer great ventilation, even during tougher tasks. To further secure your comfort many of our windproofed garments have higher wind-protective collars to protect your neck from wind.
